Will and Grace : Doing the hard work, an easier way

January 15, 20262 min read

The work we do to overcome a habit is the work of change.

Change by its nature is a challenging process.

One major aspect of the change process is motivation.

Motivation is the fire, the energy, the will to work towards something.

When it comes to motivation, the smallest unit of will is choice. The power to choose one thing over another and follow that choice through with action. That is as simple as life and habit breaking gets.

The complexity lays in the fact that our power to choose is limited.

Part of the journey of change involves strengthening our power of choice. This involves mind-set, heart-set, body-set. This involves growing clarity, discernment and determination. But one thing remains, and that is our weakness.

That we have weakness is clear. You wouldn’t be doing this course unless you had weakness as you’d already be able to change your habit without our help.

In tomorrow’s mindset shift we’ll be exploring the power of weakness further. For now know this: our weakness is as real as our need for support.

It is through support that we can bridge the gap between what we want to do and what we can do. Or put another way, what we imagine and what we do. Support is a form of Grace. It comes through others, through life, through God. It can show up in all sorts of different ways but one thing is common, support takes us beyond the limit of our now into the potential of our next.

As you move through your daily life, and undertake this journey of change know that your job is to do two things:

Strengthen your will, your power of choice, and open up to support, to grace from the outside.

In this way, we work smart not hard. We must effort, yes. But we do not labour under the illusion that it is all up to us and we must do everything ourselves. When it comes to change, must embrace our failure to claim our freedom. More about this another time.

As you go forward, keep an ken eye open for the opportunities to strengthen your will and ask for support.

By doing both, you’ll be on the way to making the hard work easy.

Grace and Will, Will and Grace.
